Global Design and Outreach

Merging our long term commitment to design and education originating at our Bronx Zoo headquarters with the outreach and science in support of conservation projects around the world, Global Design and Outreach, a "One WCS" partnership between Conservation Support and EGAD (Exhibits and Graphic Arts Department), supports WCS objectives by inspiring people to care about nature, and building knowledge, pride and a commitment to conservation action.

For more information, contact David Wilkie (Conservation Support) or Sue Chin (EGAD).

Featured Projects

Funding partners for these projects include USAIDUN/GEF and private donors.

Uwinka Overlook Visitor Center

Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda

This project was part of a renovation that successfully transformed three existing buildings into a modern tourist facility under USAID’s Destination Nyungwe project. In addition to an engaging exhibit about the wildlife and people of the Nyungwe area, the visitor experience was enhanced by park wayfinding and trail interpretation. Ongoing work strengthens community education and outreach programs around Nyungwe and includes the construction of an informal classroom for school and community events.

Beck Interpretive Trail

Glover's Reef, Belize

WCS designed and installed an interpretive trail that highlightsthe ecology, flora and fauna at Glover’s Reef. Through strategically placed graphics, visitors gain insight into how the island was formed by the surrounding coral reefs, and the importance of protecting this seascape. WCS’s first project here in 1993 was to design and build the Glover’s Reef Research Station, employing green architectural practices.

Pongara Gateway

Pongara National Park, Gabon

This project will combine an iconic park entrance and interpretative center to engage local citizens and tourists at Pongara National Park and inspire a national constituency for conservation across Gabon. The gateway structure will be designed to serve practical needs including park offices, ticket sales, and retail, with public spaces for interpretation and activities highlighting the sea turtles that nest on Pongara’s beaches. WCS has worked with Gabon’s Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux (ANPN) on ecotourism planning and design since 2002.

Parc Nationale de Volcans

Rwanda

Our experience designing and managing zoos and national parks led us to advise the Rwandan Development Board on a park master plan for PNV. The all-inclusive plan can be used to guide long term planning and park identity at the park. The master plan includes a conceptual design for an interpretive center and trails to enhance the arrival and post-visit experience at this world-class gorilla trekking site.
